The name, as most of you know, comes from what I consider one of the great documents of human history, a true watershed, in which our forefathers asserted, and soon after established by force of arms, fundamental principles of Divine Law that underlie the great experiment in freedom under God that we call the United States of America.

It is, of course, our Declaration of Independence. It states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men….

With four words, it proclaims for all time the standard for legitimacy of any government.

A few years later, after a little experimentation, much consideration, not a little wrangling, and, I believe, a good dose of Divine inspiration, we codified the principles asserted in our Declaration, in a law called the Constitution of the United States.

This law creates, defines, and limits our federal government, a Republic, designed to perform only those few tasks better done uniformly and on a large scale than locally: things like guaranteeing a stable medium of exchange (money), managing relations with foreign countries, and coordinating our common defense.

We did this, standing firmly on a number of traditions. On the Bible, for one, which affirms God’s gift of Law, and the sacredness of every individual life and conscience. On the English common-law, which is a history-book of the struggle between the rights of man and the claims of power. And on two centuries of self-reliance on a nearly empty continent, where if anything had to be done, we had to do it ourselves…and we learned that that was the best way.

We had left behind in Europe the kings, the popes and priests, the constables and armies and tax-collecters, the guilds and the nobilities and serfdoms. On this side of the water we had learned that freedom is better. So we took all possible human care to avoid re-creating our shackles. We built a small, you might say a minimalist government.

What we see around us today seems a far cry from that.

Not to repeat material that can be found elsewhere, this site, and project, exist to teach and promote a plan and project to restore our Republic to the structure and function our Founders designed it for: to secure our rights
